Q and A with award nominated Jungle Sports staff member, Robbie Figg.

Thursday, March 21, 2013
How long have you been with Jungle Sports?
I've been working for Jungle Sports in different roles for around 8 years. I have enjoyed every minute of every session.

What motivates you as a Gamekeeper at Jungle Sports?
I like to say to parents and Superstars that I run on high-fives. By this I mean that the rewarding part about Jungle is the joy and development that I see on a daily basis in every session, this brings with it numerous high-fives.

What sports and activities do you enjoy the most?
Inside the Jungle I am a big fan of variety. Given that I'm coaching almost every day of the week I love the fact that not one single session is exactly the same even thought the program is set out well in advance. This variety comes from the reactions of all the parents and children as we go along in each session.
Outside of the Jungle I play footy (AFL) at Wembley Football Club and cricket in the summer. Before that I played football (soccer) for 12 years in the state premier league. During my much enjoyed soccer 'career' I played as a goalkeeper for WA and represented Australia at one point, before my height appeared to have stalled at a gigantic 5"9' (sadface).

What is it about the Jungle Sports programs that has seen you stay here so long?
I can only put it one way, Jungle Sports is the best sports related program I have ever come across. The programs, the games and the personnel are all absolutely fantastic! When I became a Gamekeeper at the age of 16 I was given the chance to develop and grow just as Jungle Superstars are given the chance to learn and grow within the programs.

What is your favourite memory from your time at Jungle Sports so far?
I remember walking into my second ever session of Jungle CUBS in around 2011 and one of our Superstars was in the middle of the court in his wheelchair. His mum pretty much ran towards me with a tear in her eye worried her son wouldn't be able to complete enough of the class and felt he may "hold the class back". The Head Gamekeeper at the time and myself both said at the same time "don't be silly". We had a chat and adjusted a few games accordingly, her son stayed on for 3 terms of Jungle CUBS and now attends kindergarten with an enthusiasm he didn't show before. This moment sticks in my mind because Jungle Sports really is for anyone, any ability, any age, any gender, any background. It is purely for fun and enjoyment, as well as development in the Superstars young lives.

Superstar Parent Coaches

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Jungle Sports parents are more than just ‘parents who help their children’, they are all trainee Gamekeepers (coaches) who will be given the tools to help their child at home, in the garden or at the park.

The Jungle Sports sessions will provide the knowledge for parents to have a clearer understanding of how to engage, enthuse and teach their children the fundamentals of sport in their time together away from organised activity.

There are 5 key areas that parents can benefit from attending Jungle Sports Sessions with their child

  1. 1.  Communicating and guiding their child with enthusiasm and knowledge.  Nurturing and playing a hands on role in a child’s sporting development provides an exciting opportunity for every parent.

  1. 2.  Structured 1 on 1 time where the child can learn from the coaches and the parents can learn much more of their own child.  In this day and age, quality time with a child is something to be treasured.

  1. 3.  They will be exposed to correct modern methods of coaching their child and various techniques of engaging their child in sporting activity.

  1. 4.  The sessions provide a parent to see how their child is developing in comparison to other children of a similar age.  The non-competitive nature of the Jungle Sports helps with a child understanding the basic skills which are essential before entering into competitive play.

  1. 5.  Positive reinforcement.  A child will learn far quicker with the parent giving positive feedback and keeping the child on-task.  A young child left to their own devices in a session with only a coach to listen to will learn what to do.  However, it is the parent’s guidance and reassurance in Jungle Sports sessions that accelerate the learning process and far more can be achieved each time they attend.

Jungle Explorers - Finding the hidden talents!

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

(3yr to 4.5yr) Jungle EXPLORERS:

When a child is ready to move from the CUBS sessions, they are now looking to become more proficient with the skills they are learning.  As the Explorers develop, they look to discover hidden talents that will help them to start achieving their potential.

There are 3 options for the Explorers to choose from: Jungle SOCCER and Jungle MULTI-SPORTS.

These sessions are 50mins long and follow a clear structure, are non-competitive and are still with parental participation.

When the EXPLORERS go from term to term throughout the year, they can simply play one sport or move from one Jungle sport, to another, and find each class at the appropriate development level for their learning.

You will find Explorer Sessions at our current venues on the weekends and now during the week too!

“Continuing Jungle Sports after CUBS was the best decision we could have made!  Jack is now so much more confident and his understanding of sports and his own abilities is very noticeable.” – Laura Shaw (Jungle Parent)

Jungle Lions - Something to Roar about!

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Your little Superstar is a little older and developing their sporting skills at a rapid pace.  There is no better place for them to enhance their skills and progress in a fun environment than in the Lions stage of Jungle Sports.

(4.5yr to 7yr) Jungle Lions:

The final stage in the Jungle Journey is with the Jungle Lions.  The Lions have reached the oldest age group in their chosen Jungle Sports program.  Here they will have more independent learning (although parents will still play a role in the sessions) and progress their skills to a level that will give them a head start into team sports.  The Jungle SOCCER sessions will have more Small Sided Games, more technical skills, but will continue to have the unique Jungle Sports structure and energy.  The Multi-Sports classes gives a slightly more in depth experience of a different sport each week for the children who like the opportunity of playing more than one sport.

Many parents have found that their Superstar’s understanding of sporting skills, techniques and team play was enhanced by keeping them in the final stage of Jungle Sports sessions, even as an addition to joining local teams.  They are learning when having fun!

“We were so pleased to have kept Alfie in Jungle Soccer through the oldest group, he has now turned 7 and has joined the local club.  His skills are certainly more polished than the other boys, and we feel that his extra terms in Jungle Soccer has given him a big head start!  Thank you Jungle Sports!”  Louise (The Forum)

Jungle CUBS - Your questions answered.....

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

What are the main benefits of Jungle CUBS?

The program is tailored to a young child’s needs and is purely about having fun and developing fundamental co-ordination and ball skills. Jungle Cubs covers aspects such as creativity, imagination, body movement, memory, listening, observation, understanding, decision making, patterns and function and musical games amongst other things.  You won't find the Superstars sitting on mats - they will be constantly active and having lots of touches of the balls!  With each child getting 1on1 assistance (from parents), the child learns so much faster and their understanding moves along quickly.

Does Jungle CUBS change or is it the same every term?

The CUBS program has changed dramatically in the years it has been running, and each term changes in the way of games, sports and structure. Our development team at Jungle knows what works and what doesn’t and reviews and tweaks games at a daily level.  In the last year for example we’ve added brand new sports and created almost 50 new games! We also took feedback and suggestions on board from Gamekeepers and especially from you, the parents.  So be sure that we understand the value of repetition so therefore the structure and premise of CUBS stays consistent and solid, but the program will never become stale.

My Superstar doesn’t seem to be fully attentive and I feel they might be too young...

The concept of Jungle CUBS is that the program and it’s coaches cater for this situation, even in the longer term.  If your CUB wanders off sporadically or seems to lose concentration, it would be of more benefit to persist with them at whatever age they may be.  This is due to the proven benefits of socialisation and learned behaviours from others in the group. As we’ve had children who match this scenario in the past, we at Jungle CUBS understand it can be frustrating and sometimes it may feel embarrassing for some parents, but we urge you to keep your child involved at any level of participation.  We almost always see improvement in this area and the benefits of staying with CUBS from any age (even if you feel they may be too young) far outweighs the issues with leaving or giving up your hard work and previous effort.

What’s next for my CUB as they are turning 3yrs old?

As the journey moves on, so do the different activities offered at Jungle Sports.  When a child is ready to move from the CUBS sessions, they are now looking to become more proficient with the skills they are learning.    This is called the Explorers stage.  As the Explorers develop, they look to discover hidden talents that will help them to start achieving their potential.

A popular question is; "I have a younger sibling - Can I bring them along to the session with me?"

We are more than happy for you to bring younger siblings to the sessions. They can either stay at side of court in prams, or if they are small enough to be held, then this is also fine. As long as they are adequately supervised and do not run around on the court, it will not be an issue.

A Superstars Journey

Thursday, March 08, 2012

Flynn Copeland is a seasoned pro at Jungle Sports.  He has been doing the sessions for 3yrs and has followed a Jungle Journey all the way from CUBS, through the 3yr to 4.5yr Jungle TIGERS stage and is now playing soccer in in the final LIONS stage.  We spoke with Flynn's mum Jane, about his experiences and he has developed from his first term, to the present day.

"Since starting Jungle Cubs Flynn's independence and co-ordination have gone from barely existing to fairly skilled for someone his age. He now is excited to join in and is one of the leaders rather then hiding behind me and being to scared to approach other kids.

As a family we look forward to Saturday mornings when we can all attend Jungle Sports together. Its a great time for Flynn and his dad to participate in an activity they both enjoy, they are able to bond over new skill and achievements. Its a great morning that we are able to spend together.

The best part of Jungle Sports for me is seeing my kids enjoying learning and getting new skills that they can use. Getting them used to listening and following instructions from other people and enjoying the success and praise that they receive from the Gamekeepers gives me a great sense of pride in my kids. The interaction they have with the other kids and social skills, team work and enjoying team success are all things I hadn't considered before Jungle Sports and its really nice to see your kids act in such a grown up way.

Flynn has always enjoyed sports. since starting Jungle Sports in the CUBS sessions, Flynn's skills in a variety of sports has been outstanding, when he plays with other kids his co-ordination, reflex and anticipation skills means he is able to adapt quickly to the game which means he often out runs and plays his friends and even older children. As he has the skills he is not intimidated with playing older kids he keeps up and sometimes outshines kids a couple of years older.

Flynn's confidence has been the greatest improvement.  Sports have become his ice-breaker, if there is any sporting equipment lying around, Flynn is getting amongst it. His listening skills and ability to follow instructions has also improved which to a parent is priceless.

We have noticed Flynn has gone from a meek child who won't leave my side or participate to a young guy who is busting to get amongst it, he has learnt many skills. He enjoys sport so much and uses it as a social activity. He has also mastered the art of celebrating his achievements as he is always celebrating something with an aeroplane, Hi 5 or a Jungle Turtle."

Thanks for telling Flynn's story which is yet to be completed as he is at the start of his LION stage, where he will be learning more team skills and increasing his sporting repertoire!

FAMILY WELLNESS

Simple Steps to Improve your Family Wellness

According to recent research, many children are not getting enough physical activity because their parents are failing to prioritise their health.  The research suggests that in this time poor society, parents find it easier to sit their children in front of a TV or computer rather than take them out for a nice walk or a bike ride.

But parents need to take more responsibility for their children getting enough physical activity.  Dr Ron Eaker says that although some parents might sign their children up for programs thinking they are teaching their children about exercise, “they don’t always make the connection that what they model through their actions and attitudes about exercise impacts their children more than anything else”.   It’s not enough for parents to outsource their children’s exercise and expect them to form healthy attitudes about physical activity, parents need to teach them by example.  A great way for parents to teach their children is for families to exercise together, which is something he calls “family wellness”.

As parents, it’s vital that we teach our children to be active and healthy and be positive role models.  Obese children and adolescents are at a higher risk of being obese adults than those who maintain a healthy weight.  Likewise children who establish healthy habits young will carry them with them for the rest of their life.  Exercising as a family not only has obvious physical benefits but it’s also a great opportunity for parents and children to spend quality time together.  And in a world where we all wish we had more time, it’s an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.  Get some exercise, whilst getting some much needed family time.

We’ve known for some time that childhood obesity is on the rise and as life gets busier and we struggle to juggle work and life it’s often easier to be a couch potato.  But as parents we need to start shifting our priorities and making “family wellness” number one because as a parent, providing your children with the tools to lead a healthy life is the greatest gift you can give.

Some important steps on the journey to family wellness:
•    Get a good nights sleep.  It’s no suprise to those of us with children, that sleep deprivation has been used as a form of torture.  A bad nights sleep can seriously interfere with your health. So, make sure your bedroom is quiet, limit caffeine 12 hours before you go to sleep, set a regular bedtime and bedtime ritual such as a warm bath a good book, stay away from big meals at night, avoid alcohol just before bed and quit smoking as nicotine is a stimulant and you will also suffer withdrawals during the night.  For children, it’s important to get them into a bedtime routine too.  Have some quiet time before bed, a warm bath and a story.  For infants, baby massage before bed can help settle the child, improve sleep, reduce crying and relieve problems such as wind, colic, constipation, reflux and eczema.  It even helps reduce postnatal depression.

•    Get your 2 and 5.  Adults need 2 portions of fruit and 5 portions of vegetables per day.  The amount children need depends on their age.  If you, like most parents, struggle to get your children to eat vegetables why not invest in a juicer?  Encourage your children to choose what fruit they would like and watch as it gets turned into juice.  Make a big batch and freeze it in ice cube trays or snap lock bags.

•    Drink more water.  Adults should drink at least 8 glasses a day.  Sometimes this is easier said than done but it’s important to teach your children that water is the number one source of hydration.  If you’re having trouble getting your children to drink more water, why not encourage their school to join the crunch and sip campaign.  This is a Government initiative which encourages classrooms to eat more fruit and vegetables.  In WA, participating schools receive free water bottles.

•    Eat dinner as a family around the table, not in front of the tv.  This way, you’re more likely to eat more slowly meaning you’ll not only appreciate your food more but you’ll aid better digestion.  You’re also less likely to overeat and only consume the amount of food you need.  Eating dinner as a family also gives you the opportunity to talk as a family and find out what is going on in each other’s lives.

•    Plan your meals – planning your meals means you’re not tempted to pick up takeaway on the way home from work or make a rushed unhealthy decision.  Also by planning your meals you can save yourself some time.  This winter make the most of your slow cooker.  If you know what you are having for dinner when you wake up, you can crank up the slow cooker and have dinner ready at the end of the day.  Or try some assembly cooking where you cook in bulk once a month, stocking up your freezer with yummy supplies so you don’t have to cook every day.  Use the time you’ve saved to do something active as a family.

•    Start your day as you mean to go on.  Set your alarm 20 minutes earlier so that you’re not rushing around in the morning.  You won’t really miss that extra 20 minutes especially if you’ve followed the tips above to have a good night’s sleep, but you’ll feel much better for the rest of the day by not starting it stressed.

•    Commit to exercise as a family.  Programs such as Jungle Sports are a great way for families to get active together.  Its unique program offers 50 minute soccer, rugby, dance and multi sports sessions for children aged 18 months to seven years and provides parents with fundamental skills to teach their children about sport, not just in the sessions but in the home as well. Fun ways of keeping active such as this are the first steps on the journey to a healthy and happy life.  And if you’re committing to an activity the same time each week you are more likely to stick to it.
